Join Dawn (Bear, Bear), Gavin (Cliff Bar), Parker (Beef Stew), Michael, Donald (Lost & Found) and I section hike the Appalachian Trail. In this video I hike from the Pennsylvania/Maryland state line just before Pen Mar State Park all the way to the Virginia/West Virginia state line.
A few things to mention:
The AT in Maryland is approximately 41 miles. The AT in West Virginia is up in the air for most locals since the trail crosses VA/WV multiple times before the "official" crossing. As a result, I followed the Guthook app as best I could and found the FIRST WV/VA state line crossing.
The mileage may confuse some people, so I want to explain that part, too! As I mentioned before, MD is approximately 41 miles. However, that does not consider side trails for water and the night we went off trail to stay at Greenbriar State Park for a night. Therefore, though the trail is 41 miles, I hiked far more than that to get from one end of the state to the other. If you take into consideration how many miles I took total for the week (approximately 80 miles hiked), I did much more than the standard 41 miles plus the 6.4ish to VA. Regardless of the miles, remember to hike your own hike and enjoy the trail in your own way!
